PlantVillage interns from different parts of Kenya camped at the County Green Hotel in Sikata, Kanduyi Sub-county in Bungoma County, for a 3-day training aimed at inducting them on a two-week long field activity.

The special event, overseen by the county director Dr. John Chelal, kicked off on Monday 11th October 2021 and ended on Thursday 14th October 2021. It brought together youths from 18 counties in Kenya including but not limited to Kakamega, Kisii, Baringo,Kericho,Siaya,Homa bay, Busia, Bungoma, Kilifi, Uasin Gishu, Bomet, Nandi, Elgeyo Marakwet, Kitui and Nairobi to learn about the organization and what it entails to be a Dream Team member.
In the first day, the vibrant youths had an opportunity to know and learn about each other, affirmed themselves with their environment and got polished on the purpose and objective of the training. The interns met with the different county leads, Mercilyn Tsuma (Kilifi County), Lawrence Ombwayo (Busia County) and Kelvin Nyongesa (Bungoma County),Agroforestry project lead (John Mayieka), Media and Communication Coordinator( Mercyline Tata)and training Coordinator (Gladys Ntango) who conducted different sessions during the training.
During the second day, they learnt about the basic structure and functionality of the organization and the composition and roles of Dream Team members– which they are going to be part of in the three-week field training phase.
The engaging talk was conducted by Winnie Onyango, associate country director and a Dream Team member.
On the third day, the enthusiastic interns had an engaging session with Mr. Kelvin Nyongesa, Bungoma County Lead, on functionalities of technology employed by PlantVillage Nuru and Famews apps (the apps are designed for farmers to help fight diseases and pests damage in crops).
They also shared a session with Dr. Chelal briefing them on crucial aspects of the ongoing internship program.
What the interns said after the training
The interns expressed satisfaction by the manner in which the camp was conducted. Metrine Jepkemboi from Nandi County said she loved the experience.
“I learnt a lot and was pleased to know that I am going to be part of the amazing Dream Team. It has been a dream of mine to work in the agriculture industry. PlantVillage is making my dreams come true,” she said.
Nancy Onyango from Siaya County said she loved how organized PlantVillage is and is looking forward to greater experience.
“I never knew I could find such a fantastic family amongst us. It was great experience learning about the technologies that are crucial in improving farmers’ productivity. The organization is composed of youths like me dedicated in alleviating poverty levels in communities. I can’t wait to be part of such a noble cause,” she said.
Two-week field activity program
The interns have been deployed to different parts of Bungoma and Busia counties for a two-week field activity program. This aims at equipping them with knowledge and expertise that entails a Dream Team member (research-field extension officer).
The interns, working in pairs, have a daily schedule working as field officers while visiting farmers and teaching them on how to use the Nuru and Famews apps. They will also offer extension services such as trainings and advice on agriculture to small holder farmers.
