Training on Macropropagation of Clean Banana Seedlings in Tanzania

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Current and Emerging Threats to Crops (CETC IL), in collaboration with PlantVillage and the Tanzania Agriculture Research Institute (TARI), has conducted a training for 21 individuals on macropropagation of banana seedlings in Buhigwe District in Tanzania.

The training, conducted between May 14 to 17, is part of CETC IL's efforts to intensify the fight against banana bunchy top virus (BBTV) and enhance food security in the region.

The activity, which was conducted by officers from PlantVillage and TARI, under the guidance of Mr. Emmanuel Masamaki, focused on capacity building among trainees, proper use of macropropagators, and ways of producing clean banana planting materials.

In recognition of these efforts, Buhigwe District Commissioner Col. Michael Ngayalina and District Executive Mr. George Mbilinyi commended CETC IL for providing access to clean seedlings and raising awareness among farmers on preventing and eradicating BBTV disease.

PlantVillage Tanzania officers have been training farmers on ways of preventing and eradicating BBTV through field visits and roadshows as well as distributing clean banana seedlings.

The ripple effect of this training is poised to transform banana cultivation practices across East Africa by equipping local farmers with the knowledge and tools to produce disease-free banana seedlings.
