blossom end rot

Tomato    Indiana

Do low oxygen levels contribute to blossom end rot? We have upped our calcium levels, checked our recipes, ph, and have our growing conditions in our green house perfect. Its 75 degrees with 70% humidity. We are watering for 5 minutes every half hour.

Calcium deficiency (blossom end rot) is favored by both very low and high soil moisture, which inhibit calcium uptake and cause nutrient imbalances (e.g. excess nitrogen, high potassium or insufficient boron). When soil moisture is low, calcium will not move to the roots. And in case of high soil moisture, oxygen is unavailable for root growth and calcium will not be absorbed. So the key factor is maintaining proper soil moisture and avoid high levels of nitrogen.

It is recommended to "check calcium levels, and check that nitrogen levels are in balance with other nutrients, using a petiole sap test of the youngest mature leaves during early stages of crop growth."

We are a hydroponic facility no soil. I don't know if that matters. Do you know approximately the amount of water you want to give to a tomato plant in a day. I know the measurements of water going in and out, EC and PH as well.

Our winter plants at about 8 foot high and our old crop is approximately 25 foot tall.

Dr. Ravishankar Narayana commented,
The daily water consumption mainly depends on transpiration rate, light intensity, stage of crop, etc. So it is very hard to tell the exact amount. Please check the following link for more information on Irrigation and fertilization in hydroponics.
