How do I growing tomatoes in hanging baskets?

Tomato    Zone 7B

I would like to grow some cherry and/or grape tomatoes in hanging baskets. What exactly does this involve? Do I just need to fill the basket with regular potting mix and transplant my seedlings. Will the plants naturally grow downwards from the basket or is it more complicated than that?

We grow hanging basket cherry tomatoes for our garden center. DO NOT try to grow regular indeterminate cherry tomatoes in baskets or the wind and rain will obliterate them! 'Tumbling Tom' tomatoes are the best variety we have grown yet. Start plants indoors a few weeks before it is safe to plant outdoors. Transplant 2-3 seedlings per 10-12" basket or pot. Fertilize regularly.and give them plenty of sun. 'Tumbling Tom' tomatoes reach 12-14" high and are LOADED with tasty cherry tomatoes! You can pinch out the main growing tip when plants are about 8" high if you want them to trail instead of mounding.

That sounds like fun! I think I would like to try this sometime. Any pictures of the hanging baskets? I'd love to see

One more tip: use a good quality potting mix in the basket. Garden soil and compost will turn to mud in containers and suffocate the roots. If you would like to feed your tomatoes organically, we recommend using Espoma fertilizer. I'll post a pic once our tomato baskets are grown out .

We grow about 100 tumbling Tom tomatoes in baskets for early cherry tomato production it is a great variety. I would recommend 1 plant per 10" pot after trying several different size pots ect. Something very important to remember that you need to fertigate quite often to achieve a good tomato crop because normal potting media doesn't have the nutrients they need to keep producing .
