What is causing white spots on my kale leaves?

Kale    None Given

I have some white spots on my kale leaves but they don't look like they are insect related or fungal. The plant is kept in a pot and I'm in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. I will try to upload an image soon. What do you think?

Welcome to PlantVillage. Please provide an image if you can. Is it grown outdoors or a pot. Please also tell us where you are ? That helps us a lot

Several insects can be the cause of white spots on kale leaves. Look at the photo of flea beetle damage on kale leaves (in the Plant Library). I get larger white spots on my kale at a community garden where there's a large population of harlequin bugs. It looks like random white spots. I will take a photo for the plant library the next time I go to that garden.

In cases such as these, a picture really does speak a thousand words. so if you could update your post with images then that would be really great. Generally, white spots are the result of some sort of plant pest such as bacteria, fungi or insects. There is a possibility that the spots are caused by something else, such as a nutrient deficiency but there would be other symptoms too - such as stunted growth of the plants.

As has already been mentioned, the spots could be caused by flea beetle damage. Look for tiny jumping insects in the plants. Try brushing your hand over the leaves to look for them jumping, or look for other any other insects that could be the culprit.

In terms of diseases, kale can be attacked by Cercospora fungi which can cause circular white spots on the foliage which may join together to form larger blotches. The disease is called white leaf spot and is not listed in the pest and disease section as it is not usually an important disease of kale. It is usually more severe on related turnip and mustard, but that's not to say your plants are not infected with it. Here is the link to a factsheet which describes the disease http://pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docusha...

Please do add the images so we can help further, it's also a good idea to add your location to your profile

Hey Lindsey,
Thank you so very much for your help :)

I am living in Saudi Arabia in a city by the beach it's called Jeddah I'm very close to zone 10 I guess as the weather here gets really hot and humid in summer it reaches 90s F.

Unfortunately I didn't feel comfortable to use the kale "eat it" not to save it cuz I believe it's too late but I believe your right it's the whit spot disease as it looked like white spots at first and then they kinda look like they are grayish like a burn so yes I killed it lol

I believe the pot their in is too deep that the leaves weren't breathing or getting enough circulation going through !!

Mind you they are in a AC'd green house because as I mentioned it's too hot for most of the crops .

I have meny tomato plants mix breeds and they were out because they r hot plants but they were struck by leaf miners and I treated that with Dr.earth organic oils pesticide and took then indoors and never got them back :D

It's great knowing I have someone to ask and take advice with your knowledge thank you so so much again

Love and happy gardening

Most cases of white spots leafy vegetables happen as a result of fungi attack. You may want to go through this guide to learn more about these fungal diseases! bit.ly/2qw12p2
