What is this caterpillar on my lettuce?

Hello, I found this kind of worm on my lettuce the other day, I'm not sure what it is but it looks like a silkworm, is it harmless to my plants? what can I do to control them if they are a bad thing? It was weird because it didn't eat anything that's why I'm asking if it's a bad thing to my plants. Thanks!

Update:
I've just realized that what killed my sunflower was a cutworm!! and I'm so sad and angry with them!
Also I've heard that this cutworms can be catch by putting an entire carrot on the soil and then pick it up and take the cutworms away, so I was wondering, will they eat my carrots that are next to the lettuce?!

Looks like a cutworm to me. Pick worms off and throw them far away from the plants... they usually can't find their way back.

One thing that keeps my pests way down: keeping them confused. I wrote an article on that here:
