Phone /electricity cables

I am in Cambodia and have just seen many dying palm trees with black leaves. Our guide explained that it is due to the close proximity of phone cables. Is there any truth in this?

No, this is not the reason for the leaves turning black. It is likely an infectious disease.

My guess would be that the phone or cable company had sprayed a herbicide to kill off any trees which could fall on the lines during a storm.
