Should I fertilize my seedlings?

General    None Given

I was just wondering if I need to provide my growing seedling with any additional food? I have tomatoes, egg plant, peppers etc. which are not ready to go outside yet. How long will a standard seed starting mix feed them?

We grow thousands of veggie seedlings a year for our garden center. Use a good-quality potting mix to start your seedlings. Compost and garden soil turn to mud when watered and suffocate the tender roots. Read the bag of your potting mix. Most provide a weak "starter charge" of fertilizer. If this is the case, you won't need to fertilize until the 2nd set of true leaves develop. This is also when the seedlings are ready to transplant into bigger containers. Once transplanted, apply a weak fertilizer at every watering. Remember to keep the potting mix moist (not soggy) so the seedlings can develop a healthy root system.

Let me know if you need more info on starting seedlings - I am happy to help!

no not till you prick them out and pot on if you use proper seed compost it has all the nutrients they need, do not leave in seed compost longer than needed as it will stop growth and stunt them especially toms and aubergines and never recover completly

use a weakly mixed fertilizer on them ( 1/4 tsp to gallon water) when they are about 3-4 inches if the potting mix doesn't have anything in it. should not hurt them but only once a week. not every time you water. till they are bigger.
