When to plant sprouted garlic

I have been given a sprouted soft neck garlic clove and I'm not sure what to do with it. When is the best time to plant, can I do it now? I'd prefer to plant in a container kept outdoors if possible. How should I correctly store this until planting?

In our Zone 5B I plant next year's garlic in October. Soft neck doesn't overwinter here so all mine is hardneck.

If it's sprouting you should plant it now since you plan on using a container.

Now is a great time to plant garlic. It usually takes almost a year from planting till harvest, but in the meantime, the scapes that grow up are great to use until the bulbs come out of the ground. They are also just fine for container planting.

Garlic does fine in a growing season as short as 100days, frost free; yield is moderately good if kept weed free and sufficient but not excess water.
