Best way to pollinate zucchini?

Squash    NC

Hi all. I wondered if anyone could tell me the best way to hand pollinate zucchini? I have tried using a paintbrush in the past and will likely do so again with this seasons plants. Is there any huge advantage in detaching the male flower and using it to pollinate the females? Thanks

If you have been successful pollinating with a paintbrush, I see no special advantage to switching to detached male flowers. If you do want to try the detached male flowers, what seems to work just about every time is to use about three males per female flower. Detach the male flower and peel off the petals so you are left with a short brush. You can use them one at a time or bunch them all together and swirl or dab around inside the female flower. The stigma of the female flower is sticky and will readily grab the pollen grains.

I paint with male flowers in seasons when the plants begin to flower and the bees haven't arrived. But the honeybees in my area do the main job on all my squashes, cukes, and melons.
