Where can I buy Triticale seeds?

General    Mid-Atlantic, United States

Hi, has anyone ever grown Triticale (a hybrid of wheat (Triticum) and rye (Secale))? If so, do you know where I could find a small amount of seeds to try planting some? Thanks!

Try your local Whole Foods or other organic market - often the bulk bins carry a variety of wheats and ryes - chances are, you can find it by calling around. I've planted multiple garden beds with varieties of grains purchased locally from supermarket bulk bins.

Different named varieties of triticale are available from some seed catalogs, such as
http://www.bountifulgardens.org/Triti...
which offers both a spring- and a fall-planted variety (but if you're ordering only one pack of seeds, the postage cost is significant).

I haven't grown it, but in her books on edible landscaping, Roz Creasy talks about planting a small plot of wheat each year. The neighborhood kids help harvest, winnow, and grind the wheat, then bake bread for the annual block party.
