I think it may be due to mechanical damage. Hot, dry and windy condition may have cause leaves to lose water in excess by transpiration faster than water uptake resulting in death of leaf tissue and curling or high wind may have cause the leaves to rub with twine, wall or cage resulting in leaf damage.
