Coffee branching system

Coffee    Uganda

How is the branching system related to management for high production?

I think you are referring to pruning systems which involve cutting the tree into particular shapes and following an appropriate management system to maximize production. The main aim of pruning in coffee is to maximize the amount of new growth for the next year of production and also managing the amount of fruit produced to prevent the tree over-bearing one year and not producing the next.

Several systems are used in coffee production depending on geographic location, they include single stemmed systems and multi-stemmed systems. The Arabica coffee which is mostly grown in Kenya is a single-stemmed tree and it must be pruned to prevent the production of too many branches. The FAO recommends the following procedures for pruning Arabica coffee successfully:

- Cut off the top of the tree so that the coffee tree is not taller than 1.5 to 2 metres.

- Remove the branches at the bottom of the trunk.

- Leave only the thickest and best branches on the trunk.

- Cut away all the small branches that grow on the trunk.

- Cut away all the dead and dry branches, and all diseased branches.

- Cut away suckers; they are not needed.

I hope this is useful, please post a more specific question if you need more information.
