Japanese cucumbers, keeping them healthy

Cucumber    Waialua Hill 96791

I planted half an acre of Japanese cucumbers, it's been almost 15 years since the last time I planted and took care of them. Just need to refresh and need new ideas to keep them strong and healthy. I've always planted my cucumbers in soil that hasn't been touched in almost 10 years so I didn't run into any problems back then, but the soil now has been used.

Japanese cucumber need plenty of sun light and good soil moisture. It grows well in nutrient rich soil with proper drainage. Since land has been used before, we recommend you go for soil testing.
In general the ideal pH to grow cucumber is 6.0 to 6.8.

General recommendation
1. Deep plough the land to expose and kill pathogens and pests present in soil and crop debris
2. Apply good quantity of compost or compost manure
3. Cucumber need warm soil. So mulching with black plastic sheets or with suitable organic materials (like pine or wheat straw) helps to maintain soil temperature, retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth.
4. Provide proper soil drainage
5. Follow proper spacing and apply only recommended quantity of fertilizers
6. Need regular field scouting to monitor pest and disease incidence

Thanks for the tip, next on my list is fruit flies and white wing flies, how do I control and keep them away, without using restricted chemical pesticides.

Dr. Ravishankar Narayana commented,
Avoid fruit flies damage by preventing female to lay eggs on cucumber. In small gardens it can be done by bagging fruits. For your farm you can use processed kaolin clay (known as particle film barriers) which deter fruit flies. Available in market as Surround® WP. Field sanitation also plays important role in preventing fruit fly damage.

To monitor and control white flies use yellow sticky traps. And encourage natural parasites and predators in the field like wasps and lady bird beetles.

Dr. Ravishankar Narayana commented,
Application of processed kaolin clay avoid oviposition from fruit flies. It is believed that spraying kaolin clay changes the color and texture of fruit where the fruit flies were unable to identify their host.
