potential pumpkin rot

Pumpkin    None Given

Hi, we are growing a giant pumpkin seed with 4 weeks till harvest. Is the fruit likely to rot if it sits on damp soil, are we best to lift it off the ground?
Thanking you,
Anna - Australia

Water only the base of the plant to keep the leaves and soil around pumpkin dry (it reduces the risk of disease/rotting). It is advisable to water in early evening but allow the plants to dry out before nightfall.
Also vines put out roots at every leaf, tear out the roots of the vine where it is close to the pumpkin. This will give pumpkin free room to grow without damage to the vine.
If it is raining and soil remain damp you can place pumpkin on insulating foam with holes drilled through it to drain water or place it on small pile of sand.

Charlie B. commented,
Yes, it would be best to get the fruit off the ground so that it is not in direct contact with soil. Even propping it up on a board would be good, anything that will not soak up water (no carpet, newspaper, cardboard, etc.).
