Asparagus has not emerged

Asparagus    None Given

My second year asparagus has failed to emerge this year. I'm fairly certain that it should be out by now (Iowa zone 5). Is it possible that the crowns have rotted from the all the stormy weather or is it possible that they are just late. How can I tell? If my asparagus has failed I would like to try and plant something else in the space.

Yes, they should have popped out by now. They tend to be some of the first things that come out in my garden, and by now they are going to fern. Who knows exactly why they haven't come up, but you can always carefully scrape a little soil away with your finger to inspect the crowns to see if they are still there or have rotted away.
