Hints for growing garlic?

Garlic (Allium Sativum)    Johannesburg, South Africa

Any hints on how to grow garlic would be much appreciated..

edit: Thanks for your answers! next question is - where would it be best to get good quality cloves for planting? I was thinking to just buy from the grocery store and plant?

The answers above look like they've got you covered, but my personal tips include growing both hard and softneck varieties to see what works best-- you might be surprised to find your climate and soil loves one or both, and plant you garlic in a few different places. We have three sites on our farm for growing garlic, so that if any one plot gets infected or damaged, we haven't lost it all. Besides that, it can be a good pest repellent for your plots.
