Purple Russian

Tomato    London

I have recently been given a purple Russian tomatoe plant. It currently is on my bedroom window sill and seems to be doing ok , but it is getting bigger, so should I move the plant outside and into a larger pot? It may seem obvious to move it outside but I'm concerned with wildlife ruining it.

Purple Russian is an indeterminate variety with large vines. It will need a large pot (or go in the ground) and trellising or staking.

I agree - you need a VERY large pot and make sure it doesn't tip over because the plant can get heavy with fruit. This cultivar is a heavy producer so if you just use potting soil in the pot I would add a little bit of fertilizer too.

You really do need to move it outside; it is unlikely to produce fruit if you keep it inside. If you are worried about deer or smaller animals, you'll have to protect it with some kind of fencing. I agree with the other posters, a tomato plant requires a large pot - more than 1 foot deep and 1 foot wide. Good luck!
