Can I cut the black tip off of my 2 year old avacado tree?

Avocado    Lakewood, WA

I have an avacado tree that I grew from a seed. It did amazingly well last summer and I brought it inside for the winter where it continued to do well. I put it outside a little too early and, I'm pretty sure the plant went into shock. I brought it back inside where it seems to have re-bounded, but their is about 1 inch of the very tip of it that is black and it's not growing new leaves. In the last 6 weeks, a new sprout has started at the base and is about 8 inches tall with new leaves at the top. Can I safely cut the black tip off and how do I get it to grow healthy again? And should I leave the new sprout or cut it off?

Reading this piece on Avocados and pruning http://www.californiaavocadogrowers.c...

It would appear to me that pruning is OK and side shoots are normal. Indeed side shoots give better light exposure and ultimately more fruit

It also speaks about determinate growth. It might have been that the central shoot was reaching its maximum anyway

A picture would be helpful

Yes - prune away. Avocados respond excellently to cutting.
