Mamey Sapote - Can I grow in Bangalore climate?

Dates    US

I am interested in growing Mamey Sapote (image attached) in my farm at Bangalore, India and wanted to know if this plant can grow and yield same size fruit in Bangalore as it does in Florida weather. I know there are several farms that grows this variety in Florida, but I do not know how to take plants from US to Bangalore.
Is there any time limit within which it should be planted if I carry seed? Is there any other way where we can just take a stem, or cultured cuttings etc., ?

I would really appreciate if you could provide some insights .

Thank you,
Chida

Hi Chida,

Interesting question.....

Mamey sapote is a tropical fruit and normally grows very well up to sea level 2000 ft (610 m). There are instances where mamey survived at 5000 ft (1500 m) but growth is very slow and there is considerable delay in fruit maturity.

Bangalore is at 3000 ft (900 m) above sea level and has red laterite - red, fine loamy to clayey soils. So technically speaking mamey can be grown in Bangalore but it may take more time to grow and may produce poor quality fruits.

It can be propagated by both seed and vegetatively. Problem with seed propagation is seeds are viable for short period (one has to sow seeds as soon as it is removed from the fruit) and it takes 8 to 10 years to bear fruits. Whereas vegetative propagation is by grafting. Trees from grafting usually grow fast and produce fruits within 1 to 4 years.

Carrying seeds or plant materials to India with out permission and documentation is illegal. You can contact Indian embassy to obtain permission to carry seed materials.

b. Any idea whether this is grown anywhere in India at present?

Dr. Ravishankar Narayana commented,
Summer is the better time to sow seeds. Seeds should be stratified before sowing. Ideal condition should be 27 C and > 70 % relative humidity.
You may find mamey in coastal part of Kerala and Karnataka.
