Question on animal feed in Tanzania

General    None Given

First of all so sorry for just asking a question that doesn't involving a crop. But I used to ask from here because I know I will get some help from you. I am just looking for a computer software for formulating feeds for different animals like pigs, chickens, cattle, goats, rabbits, ducks, so for anyone who have it, please help me. I just want to have it.

I am in Tanzania, the feed we use its just a simple feeds with mixture of bone meal, blood meal, oil seed cakes, corn meal. I am student studying agriculture. At home, I have chicken, cow and goats that I raised, so I want to feed them in good quality and efficient quantity, am holding a DIPLOMA in Agriculture.

Hi David:

For the past 3 years, we have been using a software program from Tower Grove Feed (www.towergrovefeed.com) for formulating poultry and swine diets for both teaching and research. It is both intuitive and web-based, so it can be accessed from anywhere and you don’t need to download the software. However, it is not free, so we cannot provide it to the Tanzanian farmer. I would assume that he does not have the resources to buy it, but he could contact the owners to see if they might make it available to him at a deep discount (they do give us a university discount for our annual license). They also can provide him with a password to enter the program and play around with it. Lastly, in order for it to be useful to the farmer, the nutrient contents of the indigenous feedstuffs that he uses would have to be entered into the ingredient matrix.

Best regards,
Bob

David:

I have a former student who is on the faculty at Makerere Univ in Uganda. My student is a reproductive physiologist, but he works closely with a nutritionist, I think, and they work with the same species. Perhaps you could put the Tanzanian student/farmer in touch with them. His name is Sadhat Walusimbi, and his email is swalusimbi@gmail.com.

Cheers
Joy

.........David - I have not explored the source listed below myself, but the software is free to educational institutions and based upon NRC nutrient requirement pubs. Not certain if this individual can request a license for himself as a student, but his institution may be able to do so and make it available to him.

Subject: Ration Evaluation and Formulation Software

Do you teach, or know of someone who teaches ration evaluation and formulation at your institution? If so, please consider REAFS (Ration Evaluation and Formulation Software). REAFS is FREE to educational institutions. Funding is provided by corporate sponsors. Sponsors are able to reach students because their information is downloaded every time a user retrieves a new feed from the on-line feed library.

New in 2017! In addition to implementation of many suggestions by users, a stand-alone instructional program will be available to run concurrently with the ration software. This small window floating over the ration display will replace paper worksheets as it walks users through the steps in ration evaluation and formulation.

REAFS software uses formulas and information from the most current NRC (National Research Council) publications. The Dairy version is a hybrid, using both CNCPS (Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System) and NRC prediction equations. There are versions of REAFS for 14 different types of economically important animals and all are operated with the same keystrokes making it possible for the student to transition from work on swine rations to dairy rations to dog rations without having to learn new software. The development of mobile companions for all 14 versions was completed this past summer.

Request FREE licenses for REAFS at the Contact Me page of www.rationformulation.com or send me your requests by replying to this email.

Thank you for your time.

Tower Grove Feed is a simple online program (https://www.towergrovefeed.com). You can use demo as user and password to try it out. Not sure the price. I would also recommend http://feedipedia.org/ as a great resource on nutrient profiles.
