Squirrels on my balcony (and plants)...

I am not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but I thought someone might be able to help. My wife and I tried to grow a few tomato, pepper and herb plants on our balcony last summer, but unfortunately our apartment complex is also home to a large number of squirrels that are frequently provisioned with peanuts and other goodies by MANY of our neighbors, which the squirrels seem to think is standard practice by all residents. As a result, our plants were constantly being dug up by these silly animals. Any suggestions as to how to deal with these uninvited guests on our balcony as we begin to think about making a 2nd attempt at growing some veggies this upcoming summer?
Please see attached photo of one of the culprits (hiding behind a 2nd plant) and how they manhandled a potted plant...not much left as you can see.

Answers
You can try cayenne or any hot pepper mixed with water and sprayed on your plants. It doesn't harm the plants but squirrels don't like the smell. You can also buy squirrel repellent at garden centers but I have never tried it so I don't know how effective it is.... hope this helps.

In addition to the good suggestion of pepper mix you can use rattraps on the balcony. It would be most unlikely that you would catch a squirrel but just the sound and shock of the trap closing would teach them your balcony is less ideal than the free lunch your neighbors provide
