Death of new growth with flower senescence

Guava    Canada

Hi. I seem to be having a strange issue with my potted 5' guava tree. It began putting on new growth about a month ago, but just recently the small new leaves dried up and died before opening. There were 2-3 leaves added per branch before they started dying, and those appear to be alright, it's just the immature ones. I'm not sure what the cause it, but I'll put as much info here as I can:

- The timing of the death happened right as the flowers were senescence. I thought it may be a natural process but I don't know enough about guava to be sure.
- The tree is growing indoors in a 7 Gal pot, and doesn't receive natural light, but I don't think that that is the issue.
- It receives fertilizer twice a month at half strength.
- It has a moderate infestation of scale, and had mealy bugs. The mealy bugs were dealt with about 2 weeks ago, and the scale is actually being removed today.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is the kind of question that is very hard to address on this form. There is just one plant and there are less than optimal growing conditions (pot, no natural light). Such conditions dont represent the normal conditions under which guava is grown. Sorry, that is not very helpful
