High mortality of Cashew saplings (photo attached)

Mango    India

Please help me figure out the reason and solution to dying of the cashew saplings. they died within a week of plantation. Attached are the images of the plant and the root zone. 15 of the 30 saplings planted have died.
No white roots are visible.

What did you grow before on this land?

Has there been a lot of rain or waterlogging on this ground?

It's fallow land but it is not flat but sloping terrain. Hence not water logged. However there is high rainfall in this area in monsoon season.
