Hi Pat,

There are 2 good ways to identify fungi. One is through microscopy, the other through DNA.
The first one consist in place a piece of the fungus you want to ID in a microscopy slide and observe the morphological characters.
The other way is more complex and require a lab to extract DNA, amplify certain gene, send your sample for sequencing and then compare against an online database (GenBank).

So, in your case, I would say that a simple microscopy would answer your question.

Some local county agricultural commissioners office have entomologist on staff that tests and identifies samples or will direct you to a list of local labs.
