What is best to plant near strawberry?

Strawberry    Zone 7

I ask this as I know that strawberry does not do well with competition. Is there something that will do well and not affect the strawberry too much. Is there an optimum amount of space to leave between a strawberry patch and other plants? I can't seem to find the information I need so any input is extremely welcome.

Herbs, plant them on one end of the garden and find out all their companion plants, which are several.

Strawberries not only don't do well with competition, they are very susceptible to diseases that other plants can tolerate at low levels. An example of this is strawberries and lettuce. Lettuce can tolerate ~50x the amount of sclerotia (verticillium wilt pathogen storage bodies) in the soil compared to strawberries. Plants that exude allelopathic compounds from their roots, typically chemicals that can inhibit soil pathogens, such as broccoli might actually be helpful. You might also try nectary plants like Sweet Alyssum to increase pollination. It's also pretty.
