Pear tree soft trunk

PlantVillage    None Given

We have a very old big pear tree. The bottom part of its trunk is very soft on one side, the wood falls off like dust if you touch it. A fox dug it out last night and created a tunnel going under the tree. Can we do anything to save the pear tree? Are there specialists who can deal with this problem?

Unfortunately it sounds like your pear tree was already starting to decline and probably has either a trunk disease or just wood rotting fungi already present. If it is relatively large this can result in a serious fall hazard so I would recommend getting a professional arbor company over to take a look to see the best method of removing it.
