Well, generally it is very hard to tell why Eriophyid mite attack coconut, but plainly eriophyid mite have a narrow host range, i.e., it infests only palm species like Cocos nucifera (coconut), Borassus flabellifer (toddy palm), Lytocaryum weddellianum and Syagrus romanzoffiana (queen palm).
According to Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), "spraying infested coconut with a mixture of 2 per cent neem oil, garlic and soap mixture has been found to be effective." For more information on how to prepare the mixture and best time to spray please see the below link
