Introduction

Current and Emerging Threats to Crops: A Practical Course
November 1 – 4, 2022

Crops face constant and ever-changing threats. To learn about the latest developments and best practices in risk assessment and management for pests and other threats to crops, the CETC Innovation Lab hosted a free, practical four-day virtual training course November 1-4, 2022, organized by Michigan State University.

The training provided an overview of localized regional current and emerging threats to crops and the latest diagnostic, assessment, and management methods and best practices. Participants left with an action plan tailored for the needs of their specific region.

Day 1: Current Situation/Status covered current and emerging global threats in crops CETC Partner countries/regions (East and Southern Africa, West and Central Africa (Francophone and Anglophone), South Asia, and Central America).

Day 2: Surveillance and Diagnostics/Assessment of Threats to Crops covered surveillance tools for early warning systems, quarantine measures for exotic pests and diseases, and diagnostic tools and technologies for pests and diseases.

Day 3: Risk Management of Threats to Crops covered options for integrated management of current and emerging threats in crops, and presented the following case studies: landscape ecology and agro-ecological/ecosystem approach, extension and outreach to farmers and service providers, and public-private partnerships for innovative technologies and management practices.

On Day 4: CETC Approach and Action Plan to address Current and Emerging Threats to Crops, participants from each region developed and presented their approach and action plans.

Sessions featured presentations followed by the opportunity for participants to ask questions and discuss. Optional office hours were available after the main session each day. Event recordings and training materials are posted here, where participants can continue the conversation, interact with our presenters, and ask additional questions.
