General    None Given

I need some help calculating how much seed I would need to plant the following vegetables, each in a 384 sq/ft area:

Carrots (384 sq/ft)
Beets (384 sq/ft)

Generally the seed rate varies from crop to crop since it depends on many factors like spacing etc.

According to University of Georgia the recommended seed rate for carrot is
Seed rate: 1- 2 lbs/ac
within-the-row and between-the-row spacing : 3" x 18"
Number of seeds per acre: 116,160
To calculate number of seeds required for 384 Sq. ft
1 acre = 43,560 square feet.
No. of seeds per acre ÷ area in square feet = 116160 ÷ 43,560 = 2.7 seeds / Sq. ft
So you need 2.7 X 384 = 1037 seeds for 384 sq. ft area

Similarly if you calculate for beets
Seed rate: 6.6- 8.8 lbs/ac
within-the-row and between-the-row spacing : 1-3" X 12-24"
Number of seeds per acre: 300,000
No. of seeds per acre ÷ area in square feet = 300000 ÷ 43,560 = 6.89 seeds / Sq. ft
So you need 6.89 X 384 = 2645 seeds for 384 sq. ft area

For Spinach
Seed rate: 8.8 - 11 lbs/ac
within-the-row and between-the-row spacing : 3 - 6" X 12-18"
Number of seeds per acre: 300,000 to 350,000
No. of seeds per acre ÷ area in square feet = 350000 ÷ 43,560 = 8 seeds / Sq. ft
So you need 8 X 384 = 3085 seeds for 384 sq. ft area

For Radish
Seed rate: 4- 5 kgs/ac (might contain 90000-140,000 seeds/kg)
within-the-row and between-the-row spacing : 1" X 12-18"
Number of seeds per acre: 360,000 to 560,000
No. of seeds per acre ÷ area in square feet = 560,000 ÷ 43,560 = 12.8 seeds / Sq. ft
So you need 12.8 X 384 = 4936 seeds for 384 sq. ft area

For Onion
Seed rate: 1 -3 lbs/ac (might contain 120,000-144,000 seeds/lb)
within-the-row and between-the-row spacing : 4" x 12"
Number of seeds per acre: 130,680
No. of seeds per acre ÷ area in square feet = 130,680 ÷ 43,560 = 3 seeds / Sq. ft
So you need 3 X 384 = 1152 seeds for 384 sq. ft area

For Tomato
Seed rate: 50 g/ac (for transplant)
within-the-row and between-the-row spacing : 24-36" X 36-48"
Number of seeds per acre: 5000 to 7000
No. of seeds per acre ÷ area in square feet = 7000 ÷ 43,560 =0 .16 seeds / Sq. ft
So you need 0.61 X 384 = 62 seeds for 384 sq. ft area

Here is an answer from the good folk over at Ask an Expert

Here's the response to your question:

Thanks for your question. I am sending you a link
http://www.mysquarefootgarden.net/pla...

to a chart which indicates how many plants and/or seeds should be planted per square foot. Take the number of seeds per square feet and multiply by 384, and it will give you the number of seeds you need. Remember, however, that many seed packets will not have 100% germination (often that rate is given on the back of the seed packet.) So, you may have to plant more than one seed per hole, and thin them when they develop their seed leaves.

Of your group, only tomatoes (in the right column) need more room than a square foot (if caged or no support), so if staked only, you will need 384 seeds.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
