What's wrong with my kale?

Kale    NC

Hi everyone!

I live in North Carolina and transplanted some lacinato kale into my garden about 3 weeks ago. The other day, I went outside to check on things, and some of my kale leaves had turned kind of white/yellow and gotten thin in the white parts. It's not really splotchy, but rather the whole inside of the leaf turning white. When I stopped by yesterday, even more leaves had turned white. Is it just a matter of underwatering? It has been warmer here the past few days.

Any ideas?

Were the plants properly hardened before you transplanted them? It sounds like the a bit of transplant shock, the plants are struggling with the increase in sunlight. The plants may recover if the damage is not too severe - are only a few leaves affected?

Katie commented,
Thanks, Lindsay! I thought it looked like some kind of sunlight issue. They were transplants I bought at a garden center, so I'm assuming they were hardened off? I transplanted them about 2-3 weeks ago.

Perhaps they were not used to being in direct sunlight and the combination of the extra light and the stress of transplanting combined to do the damage. Hopefully they recover - good luck!
