English Walnut Tree

Walnut    None Given

I have an old English Walnut tree that has an orange yellow looking fungus. What is it and how do we treat it? Please see pictures.

Photo not very clear but at first glance it appears to be lichen growing on the bark. Lichen is a symbiotic relationship between a fungus and an algae. If the branch/tree is healthy and there is no branch die-back associated with the phenomenon then it probably is lichen.

Agree with the lichen diagnosis. Lichens are not parasitic on the tree, just using branches as growth surface - epiphytes. Lichen growth has been linked with air quality as they are sensitive to air pollution.

I also think this is lichen. It should be possible to take a closer up picture with the macro setting on a regular camera. Lichen has characteristic shapes. Also touch it with your finger and see if it is hard to the touch.
