Geraniumish plant and plant with puff under flower

General    None Given

The kids and I are trying to identify plants on our property. We have two plants that we see growing wild all around, but don't know what they are. They MAY be edible, so I hope it's appropriate to ask about them here. :D I'll see if I can load images of them.

I think these two plants will be identified shortly, but I will put a guess out here to start. I think the first one may be night flowering catchfly (Silene latiflora), very similar to white campion. The plants should be pretty sticky all over. There is a pretty good description of several of the campions at the following website: http://ontariowildflowers.com/main/gr....

The second one looks like common mallow (Malva neglecta), a common weed. You can find more information on the web with a Google search.

Oh, you're good! We looked up both of them and went out and measured and counted stamens and checked for stickiness and gooeyness and other sorts of identification markers, and I think you're right on both counts! The mallow looks like it's a useful plant, and edible to boot! We've already sampled the leaves and pronounced them good. The night flowering catchfly doesn't seem to have any uses beyond affecting dreams in African diviners... probably not going to be a helpful trait for us. ;)

Be aware that the mallow can get a few feet high with a pretty hefty root. It's easy to pull when young, progressively harder (to impossible) as the taproot gets woodier and goes deeper. http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNO...
