Black spots on broad bean plants.
Broad bean, dry United Kingdom
My broad bean plants which went in the garden in the autumn are now badly affected by black spots on the leaves and stems and most of the plants. I am thinking it best to do away with them all and start again with another crop of something. We are having some very damp and humid weather up here in Blaenavon South Wales ... Should I treat the soil before replanting and if so what should I use. Last year that patch had a very successful potato crop .

brown spots on beans
Here are some pics ... hope they help I am keen to get rid of this before it spreads to my other crops.

Chocolate spot? http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?... See if the pictures there look like yours. It was hard to tell from the picture you uploaded, but from researching it appears this is a common fungus on broad beans and it affects the entire plant, including stems.

From the images, I would have to agree with Susan - it looks like chocolate spot. If you are removing the plants then try to remove everything as the fungus can survive on any plant debris left behind. You could rotate and plant in another area if you have the space and put something else where the beans were. If replanting, anything you can do to promote good drainage and reduce the humidity around the plants can help to prevent infection. Use wide spacings so that the plants are not crowded together. Water early and at the base of the plants to reduce leaf wetness and allow the plants to dry out over the course of the day. Good luck!
